What is the history of Christmas carols?
Christmas carols have a long and fascinating history. The Christmas carol service was invented in Truro in 1880 by Edward White Benson. Before this, Christmas carols hadn’t been sung in the church; they’d been sung in the pub. Carols were folk songs; originally, they were folk dances (that’s what ‘carol’ meant: ‘a dance in a ring’). In the 18th and 19th Centuries, folklorists started to collect these folk songs and smarten them up, and people started to write new ones.
One of the first Christmas carols ever to be recorded was the 129 AD ‘Angels Hymn’. Around this time, Christianity-themed hymns started taking over the previous pagan songs celebrating Winter Solstice. More and more slow, solemn hymns started to emerge in the fourth century, and by the 12th, songs referring to Nativity themes and creatures had emerged.
As for the country with the most popular Christmas songs, it seems that the United States, particularly Nashville, has a significant influence.
Which country has the most popular Christmas songs?
Country music and Christmas songs have a magical connection. Country artists perform many popular Christmas songs, and there’s a tradition among country artists to record a Christmas album at least once in their career. Some of the most popular country Christmas songs include ‘Winter Wonderland’ by Brooks & Dunn, ‘Let It Snow’ by Darius Rucker, and ‘Hard Candy Christmas’ by Dolly Parton.
